Foundation Degree in Arts: Music/Multimedia Technology

This course is intended for people wanting to develop careers in the rapidly evolving music and multimedia technology industries. Employers and the industries’ National Training Organisation, Skillset, are working with TVU on the design of this degree to ensure its relevance to employment needs.

The programme involves work-based learning and projects, forging links between academic content, development of technical and business skills and workplace contexts. Students are supported by academic tutors and industry mentors to develop a broad-based set of skills in audio, video and multi-media design and production processes. Assessment is to professional and corporate sector standards.

This is a route to new skills and a recognised qualification for those already working in the industry. TVU’s Accreditation of Prior Learning and Prior Experiential Learning processes enable students to enter the programme with ‘advanced standing’, so that they do not have to repeat areas in which they are already competent.

Aimed at mature students, already in the industry and wishing to extend their skills base, or re-skill this course provides relevant experience in the industry through a work placement scheme as well as a higher education qualification.

There are 2 routes through the course; one is biased towards media technology although it still provides a basic grounding in some music technology skills the second route is music technology biased though this route also provides media technology elements vital to success in these convergent industries. Students will be advised on which route to take on application, dependant on their background and aspirations.

Students completing the course successfully will have skills required for jobs such as studio engineer or assistant producer in audio, film, TV or multimedia. Or they might choose to go on studying for TVU’s BSc (Hons) Media Technology or BA (Hons) Music Technology.

Students study, and are assessed in, twelve modules, six at Level 1 and a further six at Level 2. Depending on the route chosen a selection of the following modules will be studied:

Level 1: Digital Imaging, Sound, Video, Internet Technologies, Contemporary Music Technology 1, Studio Practice 1, Media Technology Theory, 2D Animation.

Level 2: Designing with Sound, Music and Media in Industry 1, Digital Recording Technology, Contemporary Music Technology 2, Studio Practice 2, Project Audio Recording, Video Production Technology, 3D Modelling and Animation (simulation), Interactive Multimedia, Multimedia Portfolio.

The Music Technology route will develop skills in audio recording with some video and multimedia elements. Students will gain experience in studio and computer-based recording as well as MIDI and sound creation technologies. Students opting for the Multimedia Technology route will study computer technology and computer animation. Students will also develop and be assessed in relevant key skills.
