All music courses at LCMM strongly emphasise the interaction of the academic and the practical. This reflects a determination to deliver courses which are challenging, stimulation and the cutting edge of educational excellence. LCMM is proud to set the pace and standards for several key areas of the music industry, while still reacting creatively and sensitively to the needs of its students.
The Music Department has two specific strands: Performance and composition, and Music Technology. In both, LCMM boasts staff who devote the benefits of their distinction as acclaimed practitioners on the international stage directly to the service of their students. In Performance and composition 1:1 tuition lies at the heart of both first and second studies.
The B.Mus Performance/Composition course provides many opportunities to engage in a wide range of practical and academic studies. These include traditional areas of musicology such as 19th and 20th century music studies, alongside groundbreaking courses in repertoire studies, world music studies, and jazz and popular music. The course is deliberately vocational, with a variety of practical modules such as music management, music technology and music education. The LCMM diploma is available as a level 3 option module, enabling students to achieve this qualification as well as their degree. Minors (two modules per year) are available in both composition and Performance and can be combined with a variety of majors, including Music Technology.
Postgraduate courses (M.Mus and PG Dip) in Performance or Composition complement the undergraduate provision and provide further opportunities and links into employment. Alongside their solo activities, performers work in chamber groups, orchestra, jazz bands, rock bands and music theatre, and benefit from workshops and masterclasses given by well-known visiting artists who have included John Dankworth, Crispian Steele-Perkins, Howard Shelley, Kathryn Stott and Martino Tirimo. Composers received in-depth specialist training in Concert Music, Film & Television or Music Theatre. Alongside the core composition modules all students take modules in Orchestration and The Business of Music.
Life at LCMM revolves around our arts diary events, in which our performers and composers work with many distinguished visiting musicians, either on specific projects or in particular concerts and masterclasses. In the last year we have held festivals based on the music of American independent composers; on music written in the Terezin concertation camp during the war; a piano week celebrating the launch of our new Steinway ‘D’ concert grand piano; as well as collaboration with the Sounds New festival in Canterbury and Richard Stilgoe’s Orpheus Centre. We have also been honoured by visits from composers such as David Matthews and Dimitri Smirnov, and performers such as Piers Lane, Paul Crossley and Peter Katin, to mention only a few.
Our graduate employment record is excellent, past students now work in a variety of prestigious positions; as performers and principals with major orchestras and other ensembles; as professional singers in opera and music theatre companies; as producers and technicians in organisations such as the BBC and in recording studios around the word; and in a variety of other roles in music agencies, publishing houses and record companies.
