Video Production @ LCMM

The Video Minor Pathway has been designed to encourage students who have little or no previous practical experience in video production to explore various approaches to filmmaking and the cinema at a fundamental level and use this theoretical knowledge to underpin and inform their own creative practice. Students are exposed to a wide range of industry and artistic practice and encouraged to be innovative and develop the current forms of production whilst having a clear understanding of industry requirements.

Filmmaking has now become more accessible than ever thanks to the development of video and digital technology. Today it is a great temptation to rubbish long-established conventions, dismiss the rudiments of the production process, pick up a camera, point it and shoot. It might be fun for a while – until the novelty wears off – and until the student realises that this is where filmmaking began with the Lumiere brothers well over a century ago. Today the television and film industry are in the grip of a technological revolution. Digital has arrived and its impact cannot be underestimated. Every area of the industry from principal photography to distribution will be affected. And this is why it is imperative that the student is not only well-grounded in the theoretical approaches but is also aware of the latest technological advances – so that the Video Minor student is able to recognise the possibilities and the constraints for the modern filmmaker and take full advantage of both.

In the next few years Video Production at LCMM as a subject area set to expand and is already core to many courses across the faculty. It is our hope that with the forthcoming two new MA’s in Video and Film, Feature Filmmaking and a full-time Video Production and Film Studies Specialist undergraduate degree that we will be able to build on the already exceptional quality of the video work and create an enduring reputation as one of the foremost cradles of exciting, new and challenging video filmmaking in the country.
